Charlotte Yates -

Charlotte Yates is a recording artist based in Wellington, New Zealand where she has released five albums of her own material. Her sixth album Archipelago was released on Universal Music NZ, May 2013. Her music has been described as 'sophisticated and elegant songwriting, with an almost edible voice'. She has performed at corporate events, civil unions, concerts, clubs and festivals through out NZ and Australia, and is looking forward to playing her first gay wedding!

Charlotte performs solo with acoustic guitar, or as a duo with beats/bass player/multi-instrumentalist, Gil Eva Craig, or as a trio with Darren Mathiassen (drums) and James Illingworth (keys/bass) for a full fat funky sound.

'Charlotte Yates returned after the interval with two more songs from the "Beggar's Choice" CD, performing these with the engaging informality that one would perhaps encounter in a club or a bar. Described as a "gentle pop" number, the first song delineates a fruitless search somewhere in Spain for a flamenco club, while the following "Blood Red Moon" in classic ballad style, described the effect of the previous year's lunar eclipse - a stirring number , delivered with great panache and whimsy'

Her first album Queen Charlotte Sounds was released in 1991. The single Red Letter was an APRA Silver Scroll finalist.
Melbourne-based from 1993 to 1996, Charlotte directed the 1993/1994 Melbourne Fringe Arts Festivals. She studied Contemporary Music Technology and Composition at La Trobe University, Melbourne during 1995. Recorded in Sydney, her second album, The Desire and the Contempt won the Singer-Songwriter category at the 1997 Wellington Music Awards.

Thirty of Charlotte's lyrics were collated as One Lady Driver, published 1999. Her lyrics also feature in How You Doing an anthology of NZ comic verse. She is a regular columnist for NZ Musician and NZ Books and released her third album Dead Fish Beach, 2001.

Charlotte is the director and producer for Baxter, a compilation CD of James K Baxter's poetry set to music by twelve NZ recording artists. Performances of Baxter featured in the NZ Festival 2000, the Taranaki & Christchurch Arts Festivals in 2001 & Hamilton's FUEL Festival, 2002.

Charlotte was the artist-in-residence at the Christchurch Arts Centre during April/May 2002 where she concentrated on songwriting and guitar performance. She toured extensively with the late singer/songwriter Mahinarangi Tocker. The live album of their concerts, Touring, was released 2002. Charlotte's fourth album plainsong was released in 2003. In June, she joined the NZ Music Commission's Musician Mentoring in Schools Programme.

Charlotte was commissioned by Toi Maori Aotearoa to produce Tuwhare, a compilation CD where NZ recording artists set poetry by Hone Tuwhare to their music. Tuwhare was released in May 2005. Charlotte produced and directed the subsequent concert series at the Wellington Town Hall for the 2006 NZ International Festival of the Arts and the Auckland Festival, 2007. Her fifth solo album Beggar's Choice was released 2008.

Charlotte is directed and produced Ihimaera, a cd and concert series of lyrics by Witi Ihimaera set to music by top NZ recording artists. The concerts premiered for the Auckland Festival, March 2011, with the documentary screened on Maori TV.
