BAND BIO

An array of traditional samba rhythms mixed with reggae, funk, and rock.

Zirigidum was formed in 2008 by a diverse group of talented kiwi and Brazilian musicians to explore Afro-Brazilian music. Their name comes from the sounds of the samba beat – zirigidum. The band has been gathering a large following playing at a wide range of events around Wellington and New Zealand as well as performing on national television.

Brought together with the kiwi can-do attitude and love of Brazilian music, Zirigidum perform an array of traditional samba rhythms mixed with reggae, funk, and rock. With huge drums and loads of Brazilian percussion this band definitely has a big point of difference. Add lashings of smooth horns, flute, guitars, bass, and drum kit, along with the gorgeous vocal harmonies of Alda Rezende and Nikkie Rich, and you have a fresh approach for NZ home-grown samba song writing and performance. With lyrics in both Portuguese and English, Zirigidum convey the essential Brazilian musical vibe, in a style that is accessible to a wide range of kiwi audiences. Zirigidum moves even the most reserved crowd!
